Preparation to Teach From K–12 to Higher Ed and All Points in Between
The University of Mississippi Department of Music offers three music education degree programs to meet you where you are in your music ed journey—Bachelor of Music with an emphasis in Music Education, a Master of Music with an emphasis in Music Education, and a Ph.D. in Music Education with an optional optional concentration in Gender Studies.
Music Education Degree Programs
Bachelor of Music, Music Education
Students on the B.M.E. track prepare to teach at all levels of K–12 grade, with concentrations in keyboard, voice, or instrument. The degree program exceeds the minimum Mississippi Teacher Certification standards in vocal and instrumental music.
Master of Music, Music Education
Master of Music students choose from four areas of emphasis: band, choral, keyboard, or orchestra. From classroom to stage, our acclaimed faculty will bring your music education goals into focus and help you succeed as a music educator.
Ph.D. in Music
The Ph.D. in Music with emphasis in Music Education program is designed for students who wish to pursue advanced study in preparation for university teaching, research, and other leadership roles in music education. Students can individualize the program to fit their interests and background.

The Department of Music offers very competitive assistantships.
Assistantship assignments are based on your interests and strengths and the needs of the department. Formal acceptance to the Graduate School and a graduate program within the Department of Music is required to be considered for an assistantship.
The Music Major Advantage (MMA) is an initiative to give incoming music majors the largest scholarship package possible. Through MMA, the department aggregates scholarships and financial awards from across campus and adds funding from all areas of the Department of Music, including ensembles, to make one competitive package offer: the Music Major Advantage.
