About the Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Students interested in pursuing the courses necessary to apply to professional school in nursing are enrolled in the Allied Health Studies major. They can either complete two years of pre-requisites before applying to the professional nursing program of their choice (2+2) or they can complete the full baccalaureate degree from UM and apply to an accelerated nursing program (4+1).

Departments from across the university contribute courses to the B.A. in Allied Health Studies, which is organized by the Health Professions Advising Office in the College of Liberal Arts. This nationally recognized office helps prepare students for application and admission to allied health professional schools.

Students receive a well-rounded general education from the College of Liberal Arts that empowers them to deal with complexity, diversity, and change in the world.

The Value of an Allied Health Studies Degree

Allied Health Studies majors gain the ability to understand human behavior, communicate complex ideas, think critically, interpret data, and engage with a diverse world. These skills prepare our majors to enter any allied health profession and become leaders of the future.

What is the scope of the nursing profession?

Nurses promote health, prevent disease, and help patients cope with illness. They have a unique scope of practice and can practice independently or collaborate with all members of the healthcare team. Nurses serve as advocates for patients, families, and communities. They develop and manage nursing care plans, instruct patients and their families in proper care, and help individuals and groups take steps to improve or maintain their health.

Choose from three different paths to earn your nursing degree

Traditional BSN (2+2): Students in this track spend two years on the Oxford campus completing prerequisites before matriculating to nursing school at either the Oxford Campus or the Jackson Campus.

Traditional BSN: Freshman Early Entry.  Incoming students with a 25+ ACT score and a 3.5+ high school GPA qualify to apply for a guaranteed seat in the Jackson program only. Students provide a writing sample and have a personal interview. This is time sensitive, so see the HPAO advisor for details.

Accelerated BSN (4+1): This track is for students who wish to obtain a bachelor’s degree from the Oxford campus before attending nursing school. These students have the option of attending an accelerated nursing program on the Oxford campus that is condensed into one year.

Pre-nursing students at the University of Mississippi will be enrolled in the nursing emphasis in the B.A. in Allied Health Studies. They can
pursue different pathways to nursing school as well as apply to a wide array of programs. Prerequisites are not standardized for all nursing schools. Although A&P I and II as well as Microbiology are pretty standard requirements, additional course prerequisites can vary. Here is a list of course prerequisites for the University of Mississippi School of Nursing.

We recommend pre-nursing students visit HPAO at least once a semester to gain feedback toward becoming a competitive applicant.
