Improving Math and Science Education in Mississippi
The Center for Mathematics and Science Education (CMSE) is an externally funded center located at the University of Mississippi. The CMSE seeks to improve mathematics and science education throughout Mississippi by fostering an interaction between the K-12 and university communities, promoting the implementation of research-based methods in the classroom, and inspiring K-12 students in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields.
We strive to achieve this mission through the work of our two divisions:
- Professional Learning Division
- K-12 STEM Experiences Division
- News & Resources
- Projects & Partnerships
The ongoing work of the CMSE contributes to the overall economic advancement of the state of Mississippi through helping to increase the number and quality of:
- students entering the STEM fields in Mississippi
- new elementary teachers who will enter the classroom with a heightened understanding of mathematics and the ability to effectively communicate it to students
- in-service teachers who understand and can effectively teach mathematics and science
- graduate students who receive their advanced degrees (masters and doctorates) in mathematics or science education with a commitment to staying in this state and promoting improvements in teacher preparation and performance.
Achieving these goals will result in a larger workforce that has the high-tech skills needed by current businesses in this state and to attract future corporate ventures.
