Explore the Building Blocks of Life and the World Around You

Chemistry majors are introduced to the electronic theory of matter, organic and inorganic chemical reactions, quantum and statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, the kinetic theory of gasses, and the properties of solutions. They receive training in the theory and use of state-of-the-art chemical instrumentation, the principles of data collection and analyses, and the techniques used for the professional presentation of scientific results. One of the most exciting aspects of being a chemistry major is the opportunity to get involved in original research as early as your freshman year. These experiences give our graduates a competitive edge when applying to top graduate and health professional schools. Many go on to pursue advanced degrees at prestigious institutions across the country and around the world, thanks in part to the robust research training and faculty mentorship they receive as undergraduates. Early access to research not only enhances their academic profiles but also helps them discover and pursue their passions in chemistry, biochemistry, and related interdisciplinary fields.

Our Undergraduate Degree Programs

Students interested in studying chemistry can choose between the Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Within the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, students will select an emphasis of either Biochemistry, Chemical Physics, or Environmental Chemistry.

The B.A. degree has a wider and deeper general education foundation and allows greater compatibility with other areas of study. It requires a minor field of study or double major.American Chemical Society logo

The B.S. degree is accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS). It is more focused on math and science and requires more courses for the major.

Choosing Your Minor (or Double Major)

Bachelor of Arts students must choose a minor (or double major). Combine your study of chemistry with many other subjects based on your interests and career goals.

    Academic Advising

Freshmen chemistry majors, like most College of Liberal Arts freshmen on campus, are advised through the Center for Student Success and First Year Experience (CSSFYE), except for freshmen in the FASTrack program. Both CSSFYE and FASTrack advisors help students successfully transition to college. Sophomores through seniors are advised by an appointed advisor in the Department of Chemistry.

    Accelerated Law Program (3+3)

In a partnership with the UM School of Law, students admitted to the Accelerated Law Program may earn baccalaureate and law degrees in 6 years instead of 7 by using first year law school courses to complete their undergraduate degree. They start law school during their senior year.

    Health Professions Advising Office (HPAO)

The Health Professions Advising Office (HPAO) at the University of Mississippi has a mission is to counsel all UM health professions students on available opportunities for a health care career and advise students toward a competitive application. We take student aspirations, tailor advising to each student, and help them to become the most competitive applicant!

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

As a chemistry major at Ole Miss, you can dive into original research as early as your freshman year, working on multi-year projects and even becoming a published author. Plus, you’ll have the chance to travel to conferences in places like London, San Francisco, and Puerto Rico to present your discoveries!

SMACS: Student Members of the American Chemical Society

Our SMACS chapter hosts outreach events, including chemistry demonstrations at local museums and schools, as well as social gatherings like tailgates and bake sales. Additionally, SMACS provides valuable networking opportunities with faculty, industry professionals, and fellow students, helping members build connections for future careers in chemistry.

Study USA Travel Courses

There are three intersession (2-week) terms during the academic year that provide a convenient opportunity for faculty to offer travel courses through Study USA. Washington DC is a common destination for such chemistry offerings as:
