Are you considering submitting a research proposal in 2027 or 2028? The Emerging Researcher Orientation is designed for University of Mississippi faculty who are preparing to pursue external funding and have not yet received a research award while employed at the University of Mississippi. The program will introduce participants to the people, resources, and services available to support a successful research program while providing opportunities to connect with fellow faculty beginning their sponsored research journey.
- University of Mississippi faculty considering proposal submission in 2027 or 2028.
- Have never received a sponsored research award while employed at the University of Mississippi.
- Willing to complete required pre-work prior to the event.

Emerging Researcher Orientation Registration
During this interactive orientation, participants will engage with Office for Research and Economic Development (ORED) staff, learn about key research support services, hear from successful researchers, and build connections with peers who share similar research aspirations. The event is designed to help faculty confidently take their next steps toward securing external funding.
Participation is limited and requires an application process to ensure the program is offered to faculty who will benefit most from the experience. Selected participants will be asked to complete a small amount of required pre-work (less than one hour total) before attending. Completion of the pre-work is required to maintain enrollment in the program.

Football: Ole Miss @ Texas (Away Game)
UM Field Station
This is a family friendly event, held at the University Field Station. You can register to run the 5K trail run or just cheer on the runners as they finish. Kids are welcome to participate in their own 1mi fun run. All runners receive a t-shirt and awards are given in multiple categories. Then stay for a fun morning of science activities, food trucks, and music.

October is Biosafety and Biosecurity Month! This is the American Biological Safety Association’s (ABSA) 13th year to celebrate Biosafety and Biosecurity Month. However, this is the University of Mississippi’s second year to celebrate with a contest. Our goal is to promote awareness and shine a spotlight on training ideas, stewardship, engagement, and foster positive relationships within the research community, while supporting responsible and ethical research through our profession.
This year, the IBC is hosting a contest that encourages labs or individuals to design and submit an original* entry promoting safe lab practices, raising awareness, or sharing important biosafety messages.

The submission deadline is Thursday, October 22, 2026!
*Original entries are strongly encouraged. Participants must provide full disclosure of AI’s involvement in their entry.
The University of Mississippi is partnering with SeedAI to present AI Across America: Oxford, a single-day convening on Monday, November 16th at the Student Union at the University of Mississippi, focused on Mississippi's AI readiness.
The event will bring together leaders from academia, state government, industry, and the startup community for an honest, substantive conversation about what it actually takes to build a strong state AI ecosystem. Topics will include:
How Mississippi can turn its federal research assets, from ERDC to Stennis, into economic and scientific benefit
Where AI is accelerating scientific discovery in Mississippi labs, from uncrewed flight to rural telehealth
What the state's AI task force recommends next, and what the 2027 legislative session should take up
What communities get from the data center buildout, and who can reach the state's computing infrastructure
How Mississippi trains AI talent through its community colleges and universities, and what it takes to build and keep AI companies in the state
