Support

We support not only our patrons but our campus partners located within the Ole Miss Student Union, including the Associated Student Body, Center for Inclusion and Cross Cultural Engagement, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Ole Miss Dining Services, Ole Miss Bookstore, UMatter, University Police Department, and various student organizations.

The original Student Union opened its doors in 1939 on the Ole Miss campus. Designed in Greek Revival style and built with a large bequest from Rush C. Weir, it was named the Weir Memorial Building. In 1954, a new wing was added, and in 1965, the Grill was constructed. The building housed the Student Union and University Post Office until 1976, when the Ole Miss Student Union opened its doors. Following a 2002 renovation, the Weir Memorial Building houses the Department of Computer and Information Science as well as student computer labs.

As early as 1953, Chancellor J.D. Williams appointed George Street as chairman of a committee to study the inadequacies of the existing Student Union in Weir Memorial Building. The Union had occupied its space since 1939 and simply outgrown the facility due to enrollment growth from 1,482 students in the fall of 1939 to 2,544 students in fall 1953.

Completed in 1976, the Ole Miss Student Union features conference rooms, offices for student government and other student organizations, a food court, ATM machines, the Mississippi Federal Credit Union, lounge areas and a multipurpose room. Also located within the existing building are administrative offices for the Student Union, UMatter, Center for Inclusion and Cross Cultural Engagement, Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, Ole Miss Bookstore, and UM Box Office. 

In the summer of 2015, a major expansion and renovation project began for the Ole Miss Student Union. The 173,000-square-foot project doubled the size of the existing facility, providing larger lobbies and dining space and enhanced and increased conference meeting spaces. The completed project established the building as the hub for student organizations and leadership development. Additionally, an 8,000-square-foot ballroom and transit hub highlighted the expansion project.

Working as members of the Gertrude C. Ford Ole Miss Student Union (GCFOMSU) team, the Ole Miss Student Union Facilities, Student Government, Student Engagement & Programming, Leadership Programming, and Dance Marathon & Service Programs graduate assistants work to provide direction for student learning and academic success while assisting with the coordination of the advisory, supervisory, programmatic, operational, and administrative facets of the GCFOMSU.

Shift hours may vary depending on time of year (approximately 10-20 hours per week). Shifts are usually 3-4 hours in length. The same weekly schedule is used for the entire academic semester, resetting for a new semester and/or holiday breaks.

Our hours are: Monday – Thursday 7:30 am. – 10:00 p.m., Friday 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., and Saturday – Sunday 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

• Must be enrolled as an active student at Ole Miss during period of employment and must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
• Experience in an office setting, in a service industry, or with manual labor is beneficiary.
• Excellent customer service and communication skills are required.
• Must be reliable, friendly, responsible, and willing to work well in a team setting.

Compensation depends on experience with increases scheduled on an annual basis depending on budget and employee job performance.

Reservations Assistant 

• Work with Administrative Coordinator to schedule meetings, events, and table reservations on campus
• Coordinates with the Facilities Graduate Assistant to design room layouts for events
• Performs basic clerical duties within the office
• Assists with event planning meetings and workshop presentations for student clubs and organizations
• Provides on-site assistance at events (greets guests, directs guests to event locations, adjusts room setups as needed)
• Attends mandatory training sessions
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor(s)

Building Attendant

• Sets up and maintains spaces in the Student Union reserved by campus departments and student organizations
• Set up Audio/Visual equipment and provides troubleshooting of that equipment
• Provides on-site support and assistance before, during, and after events
• Provides basic maintenance and light custodial duties at the Ole Miss Student Union
• Maintains safety and security of the Union during operating hours
• Attends mandatory training sessions
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor(s)

Reception Desk Assistant

• Staffs the Student Union reception desk in the departmental office on the 3rd floor of the Union
• Answers incoming departmental calls, transfers calls to appropriate staff member, and helps callers find resources online
• Helps visitors and guests in-person with any questions they may have about the department, our services, and the Union building itself
• Performs basic clerical duties within the office
• Provides on-site assistance at events (greets guests, directs guests to event locations, adjusts room setups as needed)
• Attends mandatory training sessions
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor(s)
