"Learning how to program and manage data is something that stands out to me from other classes. My favorite thing about being a part of the business school are the resources they provide, career preparations, and the professors that I have had. Each semester I know I am going to be in high quality classes with professors that teach subjects thoroughly.”

About This Program

Today, one of the most valuable resources behind any business is data. In the Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A) in Management Information Systems at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), learn how to help organizations develop better ways to collect data, use it more efficiently, and build solutions to make better decisions.

If you’re excited by a career that lets you build big-picture plans to use data strategically while also diving into the 0s and 1s needed to carry it out, an MIS degree is for you.

What to Expect

Gain the skills to create desktop and mobile applications, web pages, and databases with a B.B.A. in Management Information Systems. It’s like getting two degrees for the price of one: While you gain a sophisticated technical background, you also acquire foundational knowledge in business from our AACSB-accredited School of Business Administration.

But you’ll also know how to get the work done to solve problems yourself, learning on the latest systems used by professionals. The MIS degree program prepares you to be proficient in coding languages by the time you graduate, including Visual Basic and C#, using Visual Studio, in addition to UML, Java, JavaScript, PHP, Oracle, MySQL, and SQL Server.

    Curriculum

MIS specialists must speak the language of both technology and business. Your classes prepare you for both while laying a foundation in writing, the arts and humanities, math, and science.
To solve business problems, you need to understand business. Our core curriculum gives you the background you need. Before you graduate, you take classes covering need-to-know material in economics, marketing, management, operations, and other areas.

In addition to general business requirements, students take several classes specializing in MIS-focused topics such as programming, analytics, and management. Courses cover topics such as:

    • Cybersecurity and Information Assurance
    • Database Management
    • Information Concepts and Processes
    • Information Systems Technology
    • Organizational Functions and Management

It’s one thing to recognize the importance of data in decision-making and another to understand how to organize, manipulate, and use it. Learn about programming, systems analysis, and other valuable topics with an MIS minor.

Students from other schools/colleges at the University of Mississippi can earn a Management Information Systems minor by completing the following courses:

    • ECON/BUS 230 – Business Statistics I
    • MIS 280 – Business Application Programming I
    • MIS 309 or GB 310 – Management Information Systems

& 3 courses (9 hours) from the following:

    • MIS 307 – Systems Analysis Design
    • MIS 317 – Applied Systems Analysis and Design
    • MIS 330 – Business Application Programming II
    • MIS 408 – Advanced Management Information Systems
    • MIS 412 – Web Application Programming

Students must complete at least 6 hours of minor courses in residence at the University of Mississippi and have a 2.0 or higher GPA in the minor requirements.

    Careers with an MIS Degree

Data drives business. Graduates with an MIS degree are in demand, with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting the number of jobs in the field to grow by 15 percent through 2032. That’s significantly faster than other fields. (And the pay is higher, too — in 2022, the median salary for an MIS expert was $164,070 a year.)

Ole Miss alumni work for leading companies such as FedEx, Microsoft, and Yahoo! To help you follow their path, our Career Preparation Services office can help you build your interview techniques, write a résumé, and find internships and other opportunities.

Graduate from the MIS degree program prepared to work in positions such as:

    • Database Administrator
    • IT Development Project Leader
