Student Employees

We’re here to help you get started with your on-campus job.

Are you looking for a student job?

On-campus employment gives students the opportunity to earn money, grow their campus connections, and take away valuable work experiences, often with a flexible schedule.

If you are interested in finding student employment, a good place to start is by visiting or contacting the departments where you would like to work. Ask the people in charge if they have any openings for student employment or work-study.

You can also search for student jobs on the university’s main careers site.

International student employment

Eligible international students with F-1 or J-1 visas can hold on-campus jobs. International students can apply for jobs like any other student.

For more information on options and requirements, visit the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) website.

Starting your student job

Congratulations on your new position! What’s next?

Step 1: Complete your onboarding information.

You will receive a link for the “New Employee Wizard” via email. This onboarding paperwork includes your I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form, and emergency contact information.

It will take approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete this process and you will need the following information:

  • Social security number
  • Driver’s license
  • Bank details
  • Emergency contact information

You will be asked to create a password as you begin the New Employee Wizard. Please remember this password as you will be prompted to re-enter it at the completion of this process for verification purposes. Your password must consist of at least eight characters, including one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, and one symbol or special character.

Step 2: Present your authorization to work to Human Resources.

Any time prior to, or within the first three working days of your student employment, visit Human Resources with your proof of authorization to work.

Human Resources is located at Jackson Avenue Center – Central (1111 Jackson Avenue West).

Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a need-based program offered through the Financial Aid office. FWS is offered as a part of your total financial aid package to assist you in financing your education at the University of Mississippi. This is money that does not have to be repaid.

Learn more about FWS in our Student Guide to Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program.

If you qualify for work-study, it will be listed on your Financial Aid award letter. If you have questions or need help related to FWS, contact the Office of Financial Aid.

You are eligible to apply for a student job if you are taking 3 or more credits during a semester.

All hourly student workers and undergraduate students working on a stipend will be limited to an absolute aggregated total of 25 hours of work per week (Monday-Sunday). If a student’s work time exceeds the 25-hour per week limit, the student’s employment may be ended immediately.

Note: International students with F-1 or J-1 student status may work 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters (Monday-Sunday). Hours may increase to 25 during full weeks of the summer, if eligible for summer to be considered the annual vacation. Summer is not the annual vacation if it is a student’s first or last term at the University of Mississippi. For more details, check the International Student Employment policy.

After you graduate, you can continue working as a student worker until the next semester starts. However, you won’t be able to work as a student worker once the new semester begins.

Note: International students might not be eligible to keep working after graduation. Please check with International Programs about your visa eligibility.

A completed I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form is required for all employees. The purpose of the form is to verify that you are eligible to work in the United States.

Any time prior to, or within the first three working days of your student employment, visit Human Resources with your acceptable documents. A list of acceptable documents is available in the I-9 Form.

We cannot accept copies or faxes. Only original documents will be accepted. The only exception is that you may present a certified copy of a birth certificate.

Please complete the online form. We will verify your registration through the Selective Service using the information that you provide, it is not necessary for us to have the number in order to complete this transaction.

Yes! The Payroll and Student Employment system is a separate computer system from the rest of student service, Bursar and Registrar systems. Even if you just updated your address on MyOleMiss, you still need to update your address with Student Employment through the “Employee” and “Self Service” system or by visiting the Student Employment department in Lester Hall. It is important that you keep your address up-to-date so that you will receive your W-2 form at the end of the year.

Payroll is twice-monthly. Paydays are on the 15th and last day of each month. View the payroll calendar here

Paychecks for student workers can be sent by mail or distributed via direct deposit. You will select which method you prefer when filling out your new employee paperwork. If you do not select a method, your check will be sent by mail by default.

Employee Self-Service allows employees, including active student employees, to go online to perform common tasks such as change of address or direct deposit information.

Student employees can use the Employee Self-Service application and Addresses and Communication Preferences to update their home address, office address and emergency contact information.

To access Employee Self-Service, Login to myOleMiss, Choose the “Employee” the sub-tab “Self-Service” and then select “Address/communication Preferences” from the “Detailed Navigation” menu located on the left.
