Haley Barbour Center for Manufacturing Excellence

WHAT WE DO

The Haley Barbour Center for Manufacturing Excellence (CME) helps students prepare for the manufacturing industry through educational programs, extension services, and economic development initiatives.

Preparing the next generation of leaders in modern manufacturing

At the Haley Barbour Center for Manufacturing Excellence (CME), we believe people are the most valuable resource in any organization. That’s why everything we do is centered around preparing the next generation of servant-leaders for the manufacturing industry.

Where Innovation Meets Industry

CME offers one of the most distinctive undergraduate experiences in the country. Our program blends engineering, business, accountancy, and communication into a single, hands-on curriculum—all through the lens of modern manufacturing. Students graduate with a minor or emphasis in manufacturing alongside their chosen major, equipped with the knowledge and real-world experience today’s industry demands.

Learning by Doing

Inside our LEED-certified facility, students gain experience on a 12,000-square-foot manufacturing floor where safety, teamwork, and creative problem-solving are put into action. Our interdisciplinary, collaborative learning model mirrors the real-world challenges of advanced manufacturing and emphasizes lean principles like respect for people and continuous improvement.

Beyond the Classroom

Through internships, co-ops, and on-site industry learning, students connect with top manufacturing companies and develop the leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills needed to succeed. These opportunities help students discover their passions and prepare for meaningful careers from day one.

Powered by Experience

Our faculty and instructors bring decades of combined academic and industry knowledge. They work closely with students to guide them toward careers that align with their goals and strengths.

With a job placement rate at 100%, CME graduates are in high demand—ready to lead, innovate, and thrive in the evolving world of manufacturing.

Minor or Emphasis in Manufacturing

Students accepted into the CME earn an 18-credit minor or emphasis in manufacturing alongside their major degree. This interdisciplinary program introduces students to key principles of engineering, business, and accountancy—all through the lens of manufacturing.

CME coursework blends classroom learning with hands-on experience in areas like product realization, strategic planning, and lean manufacturing. Students also explore topics such as financial management for manufacturing and complete a capstone project that brings together everything they’ve learned.

Who Can Apply?

CME partners closely with the School of Engineering, School of Business Administration, and the Patterson School of Accountancy, but students from any academic major may apply to the program.

Freshman Admission

To be considered for freshman entry into the CME, students must first complete a general admissions application to the University of Mississippi.

Once that application is submitted, students can access the CME application through the Special Programs and Scholarship Application portal.

Admission is competitive and holistic, with space for approximately 60 students per year.

Sophomore Entry Program

Students who are not admitted as freshmen may apply during their second semester for the Sophomore Entry Program. Applications open at the beginning of each spring semester. Admission is based on:

  • A minimum 3.2 GPA
  • Enrollment in an approved course of study
  • Seat availability
  • Typically being in the second semester of freshman year

Students should meet with their academic advisor to understand how CME courses apply toward their degree requirements.
