1956
In 1956, white Republicans -- commonly known as the “Lily Whites” -- sought to consolidate their standing by petitioning the National Republican Party for official recognition and all delegate seats. The Republican National Committee negotiated a compromise that split the state's convention seating between the "Black and Tans" and the "Lily Whites." Although Black-and-Tan leader Perry Howard retained his national committee post, the latter group gained the state executive committee chairmanship and control of all policy decisions.
