Welcome from the Chair
The History Department is an exciting and supportive academic community where you study the past in its rich complexity as a tool to prepare for your future. Drop by the History office in 310 Bishop Hall, or schedule a meeting with our undergraduate advisor, to explore how a History major or minor might be right for you.
Whether your dream is to become a journalist, lawyer, teacher, member of the foreign service or museum professional, the skills and knowledge you gain through History courses provide the foundation to succeed in a wide variety of careers. In our classes, we explore how the discipline of History helps us understand our shared and diverse past, providing an important perspective on the contemporary world. In addition to honing your writing and analytical skills, our classes can also teach you how to share research results through digital mapping software, to develop online history exhibits, and to collect oral histories.
American History, and especially the history of the US South, is the core specialty of our department. But our faculty also includes experts on almost every other region of the globe.
Besides being world-class researchers, the members of our department are also award-winning teachers recognized for their engaging classrooms. We offer classes on topics ranging from the US Civil War, the Global History of World War Two, and the History of Piracy in the Caribbean, to the Urban History of Shanghai.
Come take a History class and you will have access to that rare instructor who is both expert scholar and master teacher, a combination our faculty take pride in offering to all University of Mississippi students!
