About the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management
The BS in Hospitality Management degree is designed to enhance and strengthen students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills so that they can address, meet, and adapt to the various needs of the hospitality industry in managerial positions.
Hospitality majors gain practical knowledge of the industry through diverse educational opportunities, including study abroad, educational field trips to surrounding businesses, and student internships.
Students pursuing a degree in hospitality will also have opportunities to operate Lenoir Dining, a student-run restaurant located in Lenoir Hall and get hands-on experience at the Inn at Ole Miss.

Hospitality Management isn’t just a bachelor’s degree. Students can also choose to pursue Hospitality Management as a minor.
The Hospitality Management Minor provides students with practical and professional knowledge and understanding of the scope and impact of the hospitality industry with a focus on management skills to prepare students for a career in the hospitality industry.
Students pursuing a minor in hospitality management must complete 18 hours (6 courses). This minor can be completed online.

Information and communication technologies (ICT) have emerged as key platforms to facilitate operations, commerce, and communication on a global basis. In the hospitality and tourism industry, the importance of information technology systems has increased tremendously in the past few years – and this trend will certainly continue. The integration of technology systems into the operation, marketing, and management efforts of hospitality and tourism organizations is an important key to success. This integration requires that technology and the overall organizational mission/goals are coordinated to achieve the desired effectiveness. This course is designed to cover topics related to information system applications in the hospitality industry.

Get Hands-on Industry Experience
Freshman through Junior years
Hospitality Majors are involved in many areas of the industry during their time at UM. Much of this experience is gained through the accumulation of 600 industry hours.
The Program’s Pre-Internship requires 200 industry hours (total) during Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior years. Students earn hours by assisting in departmental and campus-wide events, working in the local hospitality industry, and volunteering within the Lafayette-Oxford-University community. Hospitality Majors may also pursue opportunities in other locations like their hometown.
Senior Year
Once students complete the 200 required Pre-Internship hours and other course prerequisites, they can register and complete the hospitality management internship, NHM 484. Students enrolled in this coursework work an average of 40 hours a week during Fall, Spring, or Full summer semester, completing a total of 400 hours in an enriching and rewarding facet of the industry.
Although hospitality majors find their own pre-internships and internships, it is recommended that you seek advice from your HM Faculty Mentor. HM Faculty Mentors are dedicated to assisting students find the perfect industry for their career after graduation.
