Navigating Registration Errors

Use the information below to find out why you are receiving general or registration error messages in Experience.

General Error Message

Below are the most common general errors and how to solve them.

“You have Holds which will prevent registration.” 

What does this mean? 
The student has a registration HOLD, preventing them from adding or dropping any courses. This may be due to an outstanding balance or another requirement that has not yet been completed.
 

Solution: 
The student needs to view their student account in Experience to see which office applied the hold to their account and then reach out to that office to resolve the hold.
 

“You require re-admission prior to registration.”

What does this mean? 
The student is not able to register without re-admission.

Solution: 
Please reach out to the Office of Admissions.

Registration Error Messages

Below are the most common registration errors and how to solve them.

“Student Attribute Restriction” 

What does this mean? 
This course is restricted to students with a certain attribute (e.g., honors, cohort, special program, etc.).

Solution: 
The student can contact the Dean’s Office that owns the course to request an override.

“Campus Restriction”

What does this mean? 
This course is restricted to students at a certain campus.

Solution: 
The student can contact the Dean’s Office that owns the course to request an override. This also needs to be approved by the Division of Outreach.

“Classification Restriction”

What does this mean? 
The course is restricted to certain classifications: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior.

Solution: 
The student can contact the Dean’s Office that owns the course to request an override.

“Closed Section #”

What does this mean? 
This section has reached capacity.

Solution: 
The student can contact the Dean’s Office that owns the course to request an override.

“Authorization required: Closed Section #”

What does this mean? 
This section requires permission to enroll.

Solution: 
The student can contact the Dean’s Office that owns the course to request an override.

“College Restriction”

What does this mean? 
The course is restricted to a specific School or College.

Solution: 
The student can contact the Dean’s Office that owns the course to request an override.

"Corequisite CRN # required."

What does this mean? 
The course requires a corequisite to be taken at the same time.

Solution: 
The student should register for the corequisite course or contact the Dean’s Office that owns the course to request an override.

"Degree Restriction"

What does this mean? 
The course requires the student to be declared into a specific degree type associated with an academic department.

Solution: 
The student can contact the Dean’s Office that owns the course to request an override.

"Department Restriction"

What does this mean? 
The course requires the student’s major to be in a specific department.

Solution: 
The student can contact the Dean’s Office that owns the course to request an override.

“Duplicate Course with Section #”

“Duplicate Equivalent with Section #”

“Duplicate Crosslist with Section #”

What does this mean? 
The course is the same as another course for which you have already received credit or that you are currently registered to take. This typically occurs with special topics courses that may have the same course number.

Solution: 
The student can contact the Dean’s Office that owns the course to request an override.

“UG/Grad/Professional Restriction"

What does this mean? 
This occurs when an undergraduate student attempts to register for a graduate-level course (5500 and above) or a graduate student attempts to register for an undergraduate-level course (5499 or below).

It also means that a graduate student cannot register for anything 5499 or below. Same with LAW courses, only LAW students can register for them.

Solution: 
The student can contact the Dean’s Office that owns the course to request an override.

“Linked course required Section #"

What does this mean? 
This occurs when a student attempts to register for a course that is linked to another class. Both classes must be taken and registered for together.

Solution: 
Check the Course Reference Number (CRN) and “Linked Course” button to confirm the lab/recitation is connected to the course and register. Linked courses must be taken together.

“Field of Study Restriction”

What does this mean? 
The course is restricted to a specific Major. The course requires the student’s degree program to be part of a particular major.

Solution: 
The student can contact the Dean’s Office that owns the course to request an override.

“Maximum hours exceeded”

What does this mean? 
The maximum course load is 19 hours for a regular semester. Students are advised not to take more than 19 hours without a compelling reason and a cumulative GPA four-tenths of a point above a 2.0 for each extra hour desired.

Solution: 
To register for more than 19 hours, a student must seek permission from his or her Dean’s Office. If approved, the Dean’s Office will send the student's ID number to the Registrar’s Office and inform them of the maximum number of hours the student is allowed to register for.

"Prerequisite and Test Score error”

“Prerequisite in progress”

"Prerequisite communication error”

What does this mean? 
The student has not yet fulfilled the prerequisite requirement.

Solution: 
The student can contact the Dean’s Office that owns the course to request an override.

“Program Restriction”

What does this mean? 
The course is restricted to a specific Program. The course requires the student’s major to be part of a particular program.

Solution: 
The student can contact the Dean’s Office that owns the course to request an override.

“Reserve Open-Waitlist Filled”

What does this mean? 
Some courses have seats set aside for certain groups of students. Even though the course may show an open seat, it may be reserved for a particular group. The waitlist is full.

Solution: 
The student will need to check back often or find another section of the course.

“Reserve Open - ?? on Waitlist

What does this mean? 
Some course seats are set aside for certain students. Even if the course shows an open seat, it may be reserved for a particular group of students. There is a waitlist for this course, and you may join it.

Solution: 
The student will need to check their status on the waitlist and watch for an email from the Office of the Registrar when a seat opens up.

“Time conflict with CRN #.”

What does this mean? 
This occurs when a student adds a course that is scheduled at the same time or overlaps in time with a course they are currently registered for.

Solution: 
The student should select courses that do not have time conflicts or contact their Dean’s Office to request an override.

“You have no Registration Time Ticket. Please contact the registration administrator.”

What does this mean? 
This means the student does not have a time ticket assigned.

Solution: 
The student will need to have a time ticket assigned by the Registrar’s Office. Contact the IT Helpdesk.
