Youth Mental Health First Aid for Mississippi Communities

The Department of Health, Exercise Science, and Recreation Management is happy to partner with Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA). YMHFA is a public health national certification course that teaches the skills necessary to help Mississippi youth (ages 12-18) experiencing mental health or substance concerns.

Who should take the Youth Mental Health First Aid Certification Course?

The YMHFA course is designed for Mississippi citizen's regardless of where they work. While the course is designed for a diverse community, it is particularly helpful for individuals in the following fields: 

  • Teachers
  • School Staff
  • Coaches 
  • Camp Counselors 
  • Youth Group Leaders
  • Parents
  • Adults who work with youth

What does Mental Health First Aid Cover?

Mental Health First Aid prepares you to respond to mental health and substance concerns of pre-teens and teenagers (ages 12-18), including:

  • Commons signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in the age group, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD)
  • Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges
  • How to interact with a child or adolescent in crisis 
  • How to connect the youth with help
  • Expanded content on trauma, substance use, self-care and the impact of social media and bullying

  • Exercise and Memory Laboratory

    The Exercise and Memory Laboratory is a research laboratory at the University of Mississippi within the School of Applied Sciences, under the Department of Health, Exercise Science and Recreation Management. Our laboratory examines the effects of exercise on cognitive function, primarily memory function.

  • Exercise, Nutrition, and Performance Lab

    The Exercise, Nutrition, and Performance Lab (ENPL) examines a wide range of subjects within exercise physiology from mechanistic to applied concepts including exercise energy metabolism, nutritional supplementation, applied technology, HrV, sport performance, resistance training, cardiovascular training, and perceptual scales.

  • Health and Sports Analytics Laboratory

    The Health and Sport Analytics Laboratory is focused on research, consulting, and training by applying measurement theory, mathematical/statistical model, research design, and computer/technology in the area of health, exercise science, and sport/recreation. The lab supports faculty-led research projects and provides research opportunities for students in the HESRM department.

  • Kevser Ermin Applied Physiology Laboratory

    The Kevser Ermin Applied Physiology Laboratory focuses on skeletal muscle adaptations to resistance exercise such as low-load alternatives to traditional resistance exercise, and the applications these methods may have on clinical, aging, and other special populations.

  • Neurophysiology and Behavior Laboratory

    The Neurophysiology and Behavior Laboratory investigates the neurobiological mechanisms of behavior. The Neurophysiology and Behavior Lab is located in the Thad Cochran Research Center on campus (animal facility).

  • Substance Use & Mental Health Research Laboratory

    The Substance Use & Mental Health Research Lab focuses on the epidemiology of mental health and substance use across the lifespan, examining these constructs through a developmental and public health lens. By implementing advanced research methodologies and analytic techniques, our lab explores the relationships between substance use, mental health, and achievement, with particular focus on associations with academic and employment outcomes among young adult and student populations.
