A virtual private network (VPN) provides a secure connection between your networked device and a protected service.
Some of UM’s more sensitive services require a VPN when the authorized user is off campus. More advanced services may require a VPN even when on the campus network. We use the Cisco AnyConnect client for all of our VPN needs.
University employees have VPN access through their WebID accounts. Students who work with some secure services may need VPN accounts, and these may be requested by their managers. Special VPN accounts are used by outside entities and related vendors who work closely with UM services. All request for VPN access should be made through the IT Helpdesk.
You will only need to install and configure your Cisco AnyConnect client on your device once.
